How to Decorate a Small Balcony

The appearance of a balcony, regardless of its surface, contributes to the overall image of the entire house, therefore it should not be overlooked its arrangement and decoration. Although at first glance it seems quite difficult, even a small balcony can be transformed into the cozy retreat of your home.

Small Balcony

Considering the shape of the available space (long and narrow or wide), if it is open or closed balcony and the floor type (concrete slab, tiles or parquet), you can choose the furniture, plants and accessories that fit the best in this small space.

Of course a small space does not allow too many options for arrangement and decoration, so first of all, you need to answer these questions:

  1. Do you want your balcony to become a living space with table and chairs or it should only be an open place for plants and flowers?
  2. Is it big enough for patio furniture?

In fact, the balcony decorating style should coincide with the design of the room because from an architectural point of view, the balcony is an extension of the room, which connects the interior and exterior, and the continuity is an essential factor especially for small spaces.

The decor should be simple, airy and last but not least … green. Why? Because, regardless of the chosen design in all balconies will meet a common element: plants. Of course, their size should be reported to the balcony size. Palm trees and small ornamental trees for indoor will completely improve the atmosphere of the balcony, but they are not recommended in tight spaces. Begonias, geraniums, daffodils, camellias and azaleas are just a few examples of plants suitable for such balcony type. You can gain space if you use metal supports with multiple arms for your flower pots. Choose for your plant pots, a unifying theme or a color that does not give a crowded feeling.

However, if the space allows, you can opt for a minimalist furniture. A coffee table and two chairs can easily find their place even in the tightest spaces. But do not forget the material of the furniture must be a tough one, especially if the balcony is open. The best materials are wrought iron, plastic and rattan. Folding furniture pieces will take up less space and will be used only when needed. However, the design of any room is not complete without accessories, so fill out the décor, with decorative cushions, candles or a lantern for night.
