Feng Shui Gardens – Harmony and Balance

If we can talk about designing our home, respecting the principles of Feng Shui, so we can talk about the green spaces around the house, especially how we can arrange them according with these principles.

Feng Shui Garden

The Chinese believe that we should live in harmony with nature and therefore we need to design green spaces so that they overflow with positive energy. It is said that it would do well both in body and soul.

Every home should have a garden, whether it’s luxury or not, it has a large field or has less space, whether the garden is located on a balcony or on a windowsill … It is important to be a small green space, especially in the urban environment, which it is artificial modified.

The combination of straight lines (Yang) and curved (Yin), colors and textures will create an atmosphere of harmony and balance.

However, to achieve a Feng Shui style garden, we must know a little Shan-Shui art, the Chinese art of landscape painting. Shan means mountain, the development of vertical heights and Yang principles. Shui, on the other hand, is correspondent Yin, water means everything is close to the earth. And a perfect garden must combine these two elements.

Flowers, trees, shrubs, rocks and water

Flowers, trees, shrubs, rocks and water must harmonize perfectly without some of them to come out more than others in this type of garden. It is therefore important to have statues, clay amphorae, wind chimes, paths, a lake with water or a fountain, lights, a place for rest, and special places where birds can feed.

Straight lines (trails, paths) should be avoided. The more they are asymmetric the chi (positive energy) will flow better. In nature, nothing is straight line, it has a certain shape, symmetry and Feng Shui gardens mimic nature. So we can create winding paths or walkways, because, the Chinese say they create a harmony beneficial for physical and mental health of bystanders. Of course, this does not mean to exaggerate and make roads extremely tortuous, because it’s not good either.

Entrance to the garden, is the Fire Area, associated with success. So here you can put red flowers, shrubs or triangular wooden elements. A place where family can gather, a gazebo, for example, where residents can dine or where to talk should not miss from the garden.

Also, children’s playgrounds should not be neglected. Be it a few swings, a bowling alley or a sandbox, the playful elements that must be rounded, find their best place in the Lake Area.

The Earth Area is associated with the couple, and based on the homeowner can be extravagant or quiet. Important is however to be a private area, secluded and with predominantly yellow flowers.

These are just some characteristic elements of Feng Shui gardens. A house that includes such a garden is not too expensive, but the harmony a balance that creates a Feng Shui garden is worth every effort.
