Steps:
1 – Find and repair the leak:
First and most important step is to fix the source of the stain. Then, you will have to repair what is causing the stain. Make sure the leak is fixed before removing a ceiling stain.
2 – Preparation:
Lay a drop cloth or a plastic sheet below the stained area of the ceiling to protect your carpeting or floor from drips. Use a stepladder and clean the stained area with a damp rag.
3 – Analyze the stain:
Analyze the area. Treating light and small stains is much easier than heavier, darker stained areas. Check also for mold. Mold may be removed by washing with a mix of bleach and water.
4 – Apply a stain blocker:
Apply a pigmented stain blocker such as Kilz or Bullseye on the stained area. Use Kilz spray for small stain or use a cheap throw-away brush or mini 6 inch roller for larger ones. Stain killers can be poisonous while in a liquid state, and one should not breathe the fumes. Allow the ceiling to dry for at least 24 hours.
5 – Paint:
Apply a coat of primer over the stain if the ceiling is not textured. Use a paint roller to paint a single coat and allow it to dry overnight.
Repaint your ceiling with a roller where the stain was with paint to match the surrounding area.
